Who Should Study Further Maths A Level?

For students who are particularly passionate about maths, Further Maths A Level can offer an even deeper insight into this subject. However, this advanced course requires a significant amount of effort and dedication, and students may wonder if it's worth it.

In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore the benefits of Further Maths, when it's necessary or not, and how it can help students with university applications and STEM subjects.

Whether you're an aspiring mathematician or simply curious about Further Maths, this guide will help you make an informed decision about whether it's worth the effort.

Further Mathematics A Level is a rigorous subject that requires serious commitment from students who are passionate about maths.

Generally speaking, Further Maths is only available to students who are studying A Level maths simultaneously or those who have already completed their A Level maths course.

Further Maths Topics

The Further Maths course covers a range of advanced topics, including proof, complex numbers, matrices, polar coordinates, hyperbolic functions, further calculus and further vectors.

The course is designed to extend and deepen students' understanding of mathematics beyond what they learn in A Level Maths.

Is Further Maths A Level Actually Worth It?

One question students might ask is whether Further Maths is worth it. Here are some key factors to consider:

  1. University Applications: If you intend to study mathematics at university, then Further Maths will be very useful, as many universities cover similar content in their first-year pure mathematics courses. Those who have already studied Further Mathematics will have a very strong foundation and will be well-prepared for university-level maths.

  2. STEM Subjects: Further Mathematics is also valuable for any students wishing to study any STEM subject at university. A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics together give a very strong mathematical foundation for those students who wish to study subjects such as physics, engineering, computer science, data science, and much more.

  3. When is Further Mathematics not needed? A Mathematics A Level is a well-respected subject whatever the subject you wish to continue at university. It demonstrates that you are a logical thinker with strong numerical and analytical thinking and is an excellent A level to have regardless of whatever subject you wish to continue studying. For those who do not intend to seek out further study into STEM subjects, Further Maths is perhaps not necessary, and they might be better to focus on the subjects they wish to continue at Higher Education.

  4. Aspiring Mathematicians: Even for aspiring mathematicians, Further Mathematics is not essential. Many schools and colleges do not offer the Further Maths A Level course, and students should not be worried by this. As a mathematics graduate and the creator of this blog, I personally was not able to study Further Mathematics at school. While it may have been useful, particularly in the first year of my mathematics degree, most mathematics degree syllabuses will cover the same content in the first year.

In conclusion, Further Mathematics A Level is worth it if you plan to study mathematics or a STEM subject at university, but it is not essential.

A Mathematics or Further Mathematics A Level is still a well-respected subject, and regardless of the subject you wish to continue studying, it demonstrates that you are a logical thinker with strong numerical and analytical skills.

Ultimately, the decision to study Further Maths should be based on your interests and goals, and whether you are prepared to put in the effort required to succeed in this challenging subject.

If you have the opportunity to study a Further Maths A Level course and it is relevant to your future goals then we wish you the best of luck in your studies!
